Monastery of Poblet, a wonderful day trip from Barcelona

The Monastery of Poblet

This beautiful 12th-century abbey resides in Catalonia and is one of the biggest abbey’s in the whole of Spain and one of the largest and most complete Cistercian abbeys in the world.

The impressive monastery – once a fortified royal residence, has a 12th century church at its centre, and contains the pantheon of the kings of Catalonia and Aragon. It is also a military complex.

The Monastery of Poblet is a working monastery to this day, and also consists of a guesthouse, sadly for male guests only, and can accommodate gentlemen seeking a pause from life who wish to silently retreat, for up to a week.

Tours are available throughout the year and are given in different languages. Although, with a guidebook it is possible to make your own way. http://www.poblet.cat/

Just a couple of hours from the city of Barcelona, a trip to the monastery is a perfect day-trip and a great respite from the heat and or noise of the industrious city.

The monastery is also close to some very photogenic countryside and medieval villages, so book your tickets, recharge your cameras and get out of Barcelona. Fall/Autumn is a great time to visit the monastery as the surrounding countryside is alive with brightly coloured and fidgeting autumn leaves.
