Sites of Interest in the Baix LLobregat Area

The Baix Llobregat, or Bajo Llobregat, is a Catalan county within the province of Barcelona to the west of the city. While the only thing that most travelers see in the area is the Barcelona airport, Baix Llobregat is actually home to several important sights and unique places to visit. If you’re considering a day trip outside of Barcelona, here are some of the main sites of interest in the Baix Llobregat region to visit.

Montserrat

On the very northern edge of the Baix Llobregat area, Montserrat is a must-see for all visitors to Barcelona. This mountaintop monastery tucked away within the rocky ridges is one of the most important sites of interest in all of Catalonia. As highest point of the Catalan lowlands, its majestic peak offers incredible views of the countryside below. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can skip the cable car ride and hike up the mountainside yourself. Whichever way up you choose, a trip to Montserrat is a great escape from the busy city of Barcelona and a one-of-a-kind destination in the Baix Llobregat region.

Catalunya en Miniatura

Located in the central region of Baix Llobregat near the town of Santa Coloma de Cervelló, Catalunya en Miniatura is a scale model theme park full of all the best sights in Catalonia all in one place. Great for adults and kids alike, you’ll come across models of all of Barcelona’s most iconic sights such as the Sagrada Familia, Cathedral of Barcelona, and Camp Nou in miniature form. The park also includes representations of sights from Girona, Tarragona, Lleida, and a Gaudí corner focused on the works of Catalonia’s most famous architect.

Colonia Güell

In the town of Santa Coloma de CervellóColonia Güell is another top site of interest in the Baix Llobregat area. Designed by Antoni Gaudí in the late 1800s, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was originally meant to be an industrial village for textile mill workers in the area. When funding was later withdrawn from the project, the site eventually went unfinished. It still stands today, however, as one of Gaudí’s most famous projects for its one of a kind architecture and beautiful crypt, the only finished portion of Colonia Güell.

Serra de Collserola Natural Park

For the outdoor lovers, Serra de Collserola Natural Park is a beautiful area home to over 8,000 hectares of preserved nature not far from Barcelona. It’s a great place to go hiking, having a picnic, admire the wildlife of the Baix Llobregat area, or just relax and enjoy a break from the busy chaos of the city. With rich biodiversity and plenty of leisure areas scattered throughout the park, those who are looking for a fun afternoon surrounded by nature will love getting lost inside. There are also several activities offered within the park such as themed nature walks, tours, and bird-watching excursions.
