On the very northern edge of the Baix Llobregat area, Montserrat is a must-see for all visitors to Barcelona. This mountaintop monastery tucked away within the rocky ridges is one of the most important sites of interest in all of Catalonia. As highest point of the Catalan lowlands, its majestic peak offers incredible views of the countryside below. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can skip the cable car ride and hike up the mountainside yourself. Whichever way up you choose, a trip to Montserrat is a great escape from the busy city of Barcelona and a one-of-a-kind destination in the Baix Llobregat region.
Located in the central region of Baix Llobregat near the town of Santa Coloma de Cervelló, Catalunya en Miniatura is a scale model theme park full of all the best sights in Catalonia all in one place. Great for adults and kids alike, you’ll come across models of all of Barcelona’s most iconic sights such as the Sagrada Familia, Cathedral of Barcelona, and Camp Nou in miniature form. The park also includes representations of sights from Girona, Tarragona, Lleida, and a Gaudí corner focused on the works of Catalonia’s most famous architect.

In the town of Santa Coloma de Cervelló, Colonia Güell is another top site of interest in the Baix Llobregat area. Designed by Antoni Gaudí in the late 1800s, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was originally meant to be an industrial village for textile mill workers in the area. When funding was later withdrawn from the project, the site eventually went unfinished. It still stands today, however, as one of Gaudí’s most famous projects for its one of a kind architecture and beautiful crypt, the only finished portion of Colonia Güell.
For the outdoor lovers, Serra de Collserola Natural Park is a beautiful area home to over 8,000 hectares of preserved nature not far from Barcelona. It’s a great place to go hiking, having a picnic, admire the wildlife of the Baix Llobregat area, or just relax and enjoy a break from the busy chaos of the city. With rich biodiversity and plenty of leisure areas scattered throughout the park, those who are looking for a fun afternoon surrounded by nature will love getting lost inside. There are also several activities offered within the park such as themed nature walks, tours, and bird-watching excursions.
