Barcelona, a cinematographic city

Barcelona is a city known worldwide for its high quality of life, for its architecture, its climate, its beaches, and for its gastronomy, among many other things. But for cinephiles, Barcelona is also the scene of great movies have been shot in its streets and buildings. If you think maybe you do not remember any, but surely if you take a look in the list below, you have watched some of these movies. ShBarcelona invites you to tour the city hand by hand of filmmakers and actors on those films.

Some films shot in Barcelona…

All About My Mother (Pedro Almodóvar, 1999), Almodóvar chose Barcelona as the scene of one of his most famous films, where Penelope Cruz, Marisa Paredes and Antonia San Juan appears and walk around the city in an eccentric plot. In the film you will recognize the Montjuïc cemetery.

The Perfume (Tom Tykwer, 2006), this adaptation of Patrick Suskind’s book was filmed in several Catalan towns but many of the scenes are located in Barcelona. You can recognize the Spanish Twon (Pueblo Español) in the final scene of the film, as well as other parts of the old town modified to adapt to the time in which the story is set.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (Woody Allen, 2008), the celebrated director revolutionized Barcelona during the filming of this movie that had actors and actresses of international fame as Scarlett Johansson, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. In its scenes you’ll recognize the Güell Park or the legendary restaurant Els 4 gats.

Biutiful (Alejandro González Iñárritu, 2010), this film shows a decadent city that surrounds the character played by Javier Bardem, an image that has little to do with the real Barcelona, but much to the cinematic Iñárritu’s style.

The Reporter (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1975), even the famous Italian director chose Barcelona as the perfect backdrop for his film, which tells the story of a journalist (Jack Nicholson) travelling around Spain and part of Europe.

“L’auberge espagnol” (Cédric Kaplisch, 2002), this famous first part of what later would have a second part shows the “wild” life of a group of Erasmus students in Barcelona. A large portrait of the city that leaves you wanting to live in it if you still haven’t lived there for a while.

Land and Freedom (Ken Loach, 1995), this film tells the story of David Carr, a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain that decides to fight on the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War.

The Final Days – “Los últimos días” (Alex Pastor, David Pastor, 2013), this film is the latest to be mentioned in this list and is about a rather curious epidemic, because who is infected by the disease develops fear of going outside their homes, they could even die if they do go outside.
