Barcelona Beaches and Beach Lingo

Barcelona is a gorgeous city, blessed with a beautiful landscape that includes both mountains and beaches.

With a climate that is mostly sunny all year round, Barcelona’s beaches invite locals and visitors for a couple of hours of sunbathing, playing beach sports or simply going for a walk.

 

In order to make you more beach-savvy, here is some information about Barcelona beaches and its beach lingo.

What you need to know about Barcelona’s beaches

Barcelona beaches

Barcelona has ten different beaches that start at Port Vell and end at the Fòrum.

  • San Sebastià beach is located right by Hotel W, also known as Hotel Vela.  It is one of the oldest beaches in Barcelona, a very peaceful area where you can find a variety of restaurants.
  • Sant Miquel beach is the next beach, close to Port Vell. Like its neighboring beach San Sebastià, Sant Miquel is one of the oldest beaches in Barcelona.
  • Barceloneta beach is one of the most popular beaches in Barcelona, located in the traditional fishing district

Rent an apartment near the beach

  • Somorrostro beach used to be the location of a shanty settlement, the same settlement where the legendary Flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya was born.
  • Nova Icària beach beach was created with the urbanization of Vila Olímpica in the end of the eighties. It is located next to the famous Mapfre towers and Frank Gehry’s fish statue.
  • Bogatell beach is another beach that was created when the area was urbanized. It is one of the beaches of Poblenou.

  • Mar Bella & Nova Mar Bella beaches are very popular with young people, where they can practice a variety of sports, including paddling and surf. These beaches also have a nudist area.
  • Llevant beach is one of the newest beaches in Barcelona, having opened only in 2006.
  • Zona de Banys Fòrum is not exactly a beach, but rather a bathing area with a sea water swimming pool, allowing visitor to experience the Mediterranean Sea in a different way.

The lingo

Consignes i Vestidors/Consignas y Vestuarios. Some beaches in Barcelona offer lockers and changing rooms. Those beaches are Barceloneta, Nova Icària, Bogatell, Mar Bella and Nova Mar Bella.

Duxtes i lavabos/Duchas y lavabos. All the beaches in Barcelona are equipped with showers (dutxes/duchas) and bathrooms (lavabos).

Gandules i para-sols/Hamacas y parasoles. Most of the beaches in Barcelona have loungers and beach umbrellas to rent during the summer.

Xiringuitos/Chiringuitos. All of the beaches in Barcelona except Sant Miquel have a beach bar where you can have a drink or bite to eat.

Jocs infantiles/Juegos infantiles. The beaches of Barceloneta, Somorrostro, Nova Icària, Bogatell and Mar Bella have children’s play areas where you can find children’s play equipment.

  • Thanks for the awesome information..I was looking for info regarding lockers/safes in Barcelona beaches where you can keep your phone, hotel keys etc. and only you have provided this info..no one was sure about this..so thanks again! could you tell me how much would it cost to rent a safe (to keep phone, keys, cash etc.) for say 2-3 hours?
