Do You Know About Barcelona’s Green Points?

In Barcelona, recycling is easy and convenient. With recycling bins on what seems like nearly every corner, doing the basic recycling of plastic, glass, and paper is simple. But what about all the waste you can’t throw into the recycling bins near your flat or quantities of waste too large to fit into the street bins? Luckily, there’s a Barcelona waste management project just for that problem. They’re called Green Points and here’s everything you need to know about Barcelona’s growing Green Point system.

What are Green Points?

Green Points are large recycling facilities in Barcelona that are usually located on the outskirts of the city. There are some smaller Green Points, however, that are located within the city center for the convenience of people who don’t have a car. The services can be used for free by all individuals but they are mainly meant to provide a place for the commercial and service sectors to bring their waste for recycling.

What can you recycle there?

At Green Point facilities, you are allowed to recycle a long list of items that you won’t be able to on the street. They take large and small appliances, gardening waste, cooking oil, old furniture, tires, ink cartridges, batteries, motor oil, fluorescent light bulbs, car batteries, cosmetics, clothes, aerosols and sprays, electric cables and more. It is, however, prohibited to bring organic waste, hazardous sanitary waste, or special industrial waste.

The Green Points within the urban area of Barcelona are designed to help the city lower the amount of household waste. Apart from large appliances, furniture, and gardening waste, you can bring most of the other items that the larger center allows. There are a few Green Points scattered throughout the city within each neighborhood. You can find the one closest to your home on the Green Point Network map.

Mobile Green Point

Mobile Green Points are trucks that travel around the city and carry out the same work as the permanent Green Points. They can be found throughout the city and they work on fixed schedules. This way, when you know what time the mobile Green Point will arrive, you can be ready to meet the workers with your household recycling.

Mobile Green Points at schools are also an educational waste management service that schools can apply for to help them dispose of waste and teach children the importance of recycling. They are available to come for special days, cultural weeks, or family events to teach parents and children about their service facilities and how to use them.

With the help of city recycling bins and Green Point facilities, keeping Barcelona clean and green is a little easier for everyone. As we all become more environmentally focused, services like Green Point provide excellent resources for the entire city.
