Barcelona’s animal sculptures and statues

If you are an animal fan, you can make a plan to visit some of Barcelona’s animal sculptures and statues. There are various ones spread across the city. Here are some of out favorites.

El Gato

Fernando Botero’s Cat sculpture arrived in Barcelona in 1987, having stopped in many locations like Parc de la Ciutadella and the Olympic Stadium, before it found its permanent site. This bronze sculpture represents a large, chubby cat, and is today a famous part of the history of Barcelona

El Caballo

If you were paying attention when you arrived at Barcelona El Prat airport, you have already seen this piece. Present in Terminal 2 since 1992, this chunky, funny-looking horse has been the greeter of millions of tourists who exit the sliding doors after collecting their luggage.

Meditación

Meditation is a statue created by sculptor Josep Granyer, representing a sitting bull in the same position as Rodin’s The Thinker. The statue was inaugurated in Barcelona in 1972, created as a parody of Rodin’s famous piece.

Coqueta

There’s nothing more delightful than to meet a giraffe that flirts with you. Or at least that is what Josep Granyer thought when he created this piece, also installed in Barcelona in 1972.

You can find the flirting giraffe at the end of Rambla Catalunya, reaching Avinguda Diagonal.

Peix

Peix (Fish) is a giant golden statue of a fish created by Frank Gehry for Barcelona in 1992. The stainless steel sculpture is fifty six meters long and thirty five meters high. It has become one of the city’s most beloved landmarks.

You can find Frank Gehry’s massive sculpture between Hotel Arts and the Mapfre Tower at the Olympic Marina.

Mamut

Mamut (Mammoth) is a large stone statue created by Miquel Dalmau. With its large size and its realistic colors, the statue fascinates those who visit Parc de la Ciutadella for the very first time.

Mamut can be found in Parc de la Ciutadella, close to the main fountain.

El Drac

El Drac is a large dragon statue by artist Andrés Nagel that doubles as a slide for kids to play in.

Gambrinus

This enormous friendly-looking prawn with lobster claws was created in 1989 by Valencian artist Javier Mariscal for the Gambrinus bar. Years later, the bar is gone, but the smiling lobster remains, greeting passersby.

Perro hambriento

One of the most haunting statues in Barcelona is the one that represents a skinny abandoned dog. Created by Artur Aldomà, the statue means to call people’s attention to the issue of animal abuse.
