Bioespacio – vegan shopping in Barcelona

One of the best organic supermarkets in Barcelona, if not the whole country, Bioespacio, in Eixample, is positively spacious and the perfect location if you are in need of picking up some healthy organic snacks or food supplies, cruelty free cosmetics, home cleaning products, organic dog or kitty fodder, vegan treats, organic fruit and vegetables (probably the best selection you’ll find in the city), Quorn frozen products, and other vegan friendly meat substitutes. You really need to go no further than Bioespacio.

What have they got?

It’s a lovely bright two-storey store that sells pretty much the full range of organic and health food products that you can get in Spain. There are the usuals: herbal teas, pasta, rice, fresh fruit and vegetables (all organic), oils, vinegar, nut butter, honey, jams, spreads, cheeses, fresh bread, olives, baby foods – the whole damn lot.

Their range is good due to the size of the place and seems to be the largest and best stocked organic supermarket in Barcelona. Infinitely bigger than Veritas on Laeitana and so the range they stock is more impressive. You can get things in here that are difficult to pick up elsewhere, such as sprouts for germinating. I’ve only seen these in Veritas previously and with few varieties. Sprouts are very expensive in Spain unfortunately but the Spaniards are catching on quickly to the health food revolution – in Barcelona at least – and this should hopefully drag the price down to normal and become affordable for all.

What else?

In addition to food you can also have beauty treatments such as facials and massages that all use organic best-quality products and there is also an organic hairdresser (peluqueria) – the first I can recall seeing in Spain. Here you can have tints, colours and treatments with organic products that are less toxic to you and what’s left of the environment.

They also run courses in healthy food preparation and hold regular classes in both pilates and yoga, although all courses and classes are held in either Catalan or Castellano, so if you’re not already au fait with the lingo, perhaps hold off until you know your subjunctives from your imperatives.

The staff at Biospacio are generally very friendly and knowledgeable and always seem happy to help you find what you need if they’ve got it. Even if you speak in syllables and use a pointy finger to get your requests across.

I love this place and can lose myself in here for at least an hour. My boyfriend says he sometimes wishes I’d get lost in there forever. Perhaps one day I will.

For other organic food in Barcelona check out Woki Organic Market and Veritas but for the best choice in the city, Bioespacio is definitely the very best and has a really diverse and good range of both fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables.

There is a loyalty card too with money off each time you spend.
