Columbus Monument, a must to see when in Barcelona

Anyone making their home in Barcelona should take some time to check out the many monuments in the city. Not only do they tell you a lot about the history of the country and the region but it will also help to let you know your way around Barcelona and will always have is landmarks for the future.

One of the first monuments in Barcelona that should be added to the list to be visited is the Columbus Monument. Situated within walking distance of the famous La Rambla thoroughfare , the monument was especially built as part of the great Barcelona exposition of 1888, to commemorate the great explorer Christopher Columbus’s first e omme expedition to the Americas .

The Columbus Monument is one of the most outstanding in the city, beautifully constructed and contains not only an image of Columbus himself but also several intricate images depicting his adventures along the way .

Walking to the Columbus monument or “Monument a Colom” can be a great experience on a nice summer’s day, as there are some great views en-route from the city center including part of Barcelona’s ancient port, providing a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean and the city’s marina.

It will be hard to miss the monument as it stands more than seven meters tall, and stands proud on top of a 40 meter tall column carved out in the Corinthian style. The image of Columbus, sculpted by Rafael Atché , shows the discoverer of the New World pointing out to see what was accepted at that time as the right direction to reach America. However it has become a part of Barcelona folklore that had Columbus followed that exact path he would have discovered Algeria instead.

Making the decision to come to live in Barcelona may be not as dramatic as sending off into the unknown to discover a whole new continent, it doesn’t mean that it would be easy if you don’t have the right maps and equipment.
