Get fit at CrossFit Eixample

With summer just around the corner, you may be looking for a new and fun way to get in shape both to feel good and to challenge yourself. One of the most challenging and unique workout programs out there is CrossFit, a program designed to make you feel like your best self and fulfill your fitness goals. So what exactly is CrossFit and how do you get started? CrossFit Eixample is one of the bigger CrossFit gyms in Barcelona where you can push yourself to the next level of fitness.

CrossFit methodology

CrossFit is all about intensity. All the workouts are based on high-intensity exercises that are a combination of different sports like weightlifting, rowing, and gymnastics. The creator, Greg Glassman, defines fitness as an increase in capacity over time, so as you work through the CrossFit workouts you will gradually increase the weights, repetitions, and intensity to increase your personal strength and stamina. No matter what your fitness level is you can begin CrossFit at any time since the program is designed for all ages and levels from beginners to Olympians. The workouts are the same for everyone but it’s all about starting out small and increasing over time. If you’re intimidated or embarrassed about your level of fitness don’t be: the staff and participants in Crossfit are there to cheer you on and help you to succeed.

Step into the gym

One of the best CrossFit gyms, or Boxes as they are called in CrossFit lingo, is located in Eixample on Carrer d’Ausiàs, not too far from the Arc de Triomf. There are a variety of classes that you can choose from throughout the day that are all a part of the CrossFit training program. While the program emphasizes high-intensity and demanding workouts there are classes that target specific aspects or muscle groups to be strengthened. On any given day at various time,s you can take part in the WOD, or the Workout of the Day.

These are created by CrossFit and practiced at all the gyms, combining cardio, strength training, and conditioning. Throughout the week at the Eixample Box, you can take classes to help you become stronger and more agile, such as yoga or gymnastics. Another popular class is MetCon, or metabolic conditioning, which is a class focused on cardio and aerobic training rather than strength. All of these classes will require your maximum effort both physically and mentally for you get the most out of it- sticking with the theory of the program, they are all challenging and will make you push yourself to the limit.

The workouts

The WOD is different every day of the week but there are many WODs that are repeated and even have names. Some are a bit easier, making them ideal for beginners and some will really make you give everything you got, and then some. Here are some workouts that are perfect for those new to CrossFit to give you a taste of the program and to get a feel for things.

The first beginner-friendly workout is the Half-Cindy. This workout is an AMRAP workout as they say in CrossFit, or, As Many Rounds/Reps As Possible. This workout asks you to do 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, and 15 air squats consecutively, as many times as possible, during 10 minutes.

You should keep track of how many rounds you get through and when you’ve mastered the Half-Cindy you can try the Cindy (the same except for 20 minutes). Another workout that you should try is sit-ups and lunges WOD which will have you feeling the burn. It’s another AMRAP workout in which you need to alternate 15 sit-ups and 15 lunges for 3 minutes, rest for 2 minutes, and then do again two more times. To really get a taste for CrossFit and the WODs, head to the Eixample box and get your sweat on!
