A day trip to Sitges from Barcelona

If you are looking for a day trip away from the hustle and bustle of Barcelona, look no further than Sitges. Less than an hour on the train from Renfe stations Passeig de Gracia, Sants or Franca, Sitges is a quiet seaside town, once known as the gay riviera. Lately, however, it was somewhat reclaimed by residents and now it’s not only limited to gay holidaymakers. With a great nightlife, beautiful beaches, a lovely old town and a balmy climate, Sitges is a perfect place for a short getaway. A return train ticket from Barcelona to gay-friendly Sitges will cost you around 7 euros.

What to do

The tiny village of Aiguadolc is just north of Sitges, right next to the yacht harbour. There’s a range of restaurants, boating related shops and clothing stores, but what you really should be looking at are the tiny whitewashed houses and labyrinthine streets. Aiguadolc is an easy and pleasant walk from the centre of Sitges.

Casa Bacardi

Don Facundi Bacardi Masso was born in Sitges and in 1886 built the distillery where the popular alcoholic drink was made. Casa Bacardi was opened on July 28^th, 2010 as an homage to the Don Bacardi and provides and interesting tour of a unique slice of history, which culminates in a taste of an exclusive type of Mojito.

Museu Cau Ferrat

Calle Fonolla, Sitges 08870

Museu Cau Ferrat is the former home and study of the artist Santiago Rusiñol, one of the most important figures of the Modernisme movement in Catalonia. The beautiful house has a stunning view at the sea and contains an amazing collection of pictures and artefacts.

If you want something more than chips on the beach, then Gofras waffles and crepes is the place to be. It even claims to be the oldest waffle house in town. Find it at c/sant Pau, 2.

Montroig café

Montroig Café is huge and something of an institution in Sitges, mostly because of its location on Calle de Marques de Montroig – one of Sitges busiest streets – and its outdoor tables where you can sit and while away a cold winter morning with a cappuccino beneath the heaters, or cool off with a chilled clara (beer with bitter lemon) after a strenuous day turning the pages of a paperback on the beach.

Montroig serves breakfasts, lunches, snacks, dinners and a multitude of drinks.

This is a nice spot although sadly with a view of Burger King – the heaters, however, make it a nice place to huddle over a warm drink in the cold winter days.
