Where to Find the Best Dessert in Barcelona

With a wealth of bakeries, pâtisseries, ice cream parlours and creperias all over the city, Barcelona is a dessert lover’s paradise. Having a massive sweet tooth, for me, dessert is always the best part of the meal.

If you share my love for a moist cake, a gooey brownie or a chewy meringue, here are some great dessert shops in Barcelona that you won’t be able to resist!

Escribà

Arguably the best pâtisserie in Barcelona, Escribà is owned by pastry chef Christian Escribà, famous for his astonishing attention to detail and extravagant sweet creations such as exploding cakes, chocolate walls and sugar jewellery.

The shop, located in the beautiful Antigua Casa Figueras building on Las Ramblas, is very Willy Wonka-esque with it’s inviting window display filled with quirky cakes and chocolate figurines.

Inside, you will find an incredible range of delicious cakes, pastries and macaroons, you will be spoilt for choice.

The small café also has an enticing selection of sweet drinks, such as the thick and sweet swiss hot chocolates made from 70% cocoa that are well worth a try.

Whilst Escribà may not be the cheapest, the high quality desserts on offer are definitely worth every penny!

Bubó

Bubó, located in the heart of Barcelona’s trendy El Born area, is the perfect place to stop if you’re in the mood for something sweet.

Opened in 2005 by award-winning pastry chef Carles Mampel, Bubó has risen in popularity among locals and tourists alike. The elegant shop is filled with rows and rows of different types of chocolates and desserts, there is something for everyone.

If you are a chocolate lover, give the Xabina cake—a vanilla sponge with praline, chocolate mousse and a molten chocolate lava topping a try – it won the Lyon’s award for the best chocolate cake in 2005, so I am pretty sure it won’t disappoint!

Espai Sucre

Espai Sucre, owned by Jordi Butron, has named itself “the only dessert restaurant in the world”. This intriguing dessert restaurant in Barcelona serves up tapas style desserts in a minimalist dining room that seats just 30.

Given the molecular gastronomy on offer, the food doesn’t come cheap, but if a fully fledged dessert experience is what you are after, Espai Sucre is the perfect place to go. 

Give the five-course dessert tasting menu a try – you will be wowed  by the well-thought-out and original sweet creations.

Art i Sa

Situated just off Plaça Reial, the cosy Art i Sa café is the perfect place to enjoy a sweet treat any time of the day. As you walk in to the charming and inviting little space, you will be struck by the tempting range of ice creams, crêpes, cakes, croissants, and pastries on offer.

All the products are made on site, using organic and local produce, meaning quality certainly isn’t lacking.

Everything on the menu is so good, it is difficult to recommend just one thing, but my absolute favourite is the dark chocolate, sea salt and olive oil crepe made freshly to order – the combination of oozing bitter chocolate, smooth olive oil and a perfectly crisp pancake is simply irresistible.

You can also choose from other great flavours such as caramelised apple and ice cream or nutella and banana. If you have room, the churros con chocolate are to die for too!
