The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc

If you are going to be visiting Barcelona with children or with your significant half, then a visit to the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc is something not to be missed. The fountain was created in 1929 as part of the city’s International Exhibition and is one attraction that continues to delight visitors to the city today.

The Magic Fountain’s schedules

The Magic Fountain usually works all year long, with the exception of the weeks when it shuts down for maintenance. The schedules are as follows:

From April 1st to May 31st – Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The fountain lights up between 9 and 10 pm and there are shows with music and color at 9 and 9:30 pm.

From June 1st to September 30th – From Wednesdays to Sundays. The fountain lights up between 9:30 and 10:30 pm and there are shows with music and color at 9:30 and 10 pm.

From October 1st to October 31st – Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The fountain lights up between 9 and 10 pm and there are shows with music and color at 9 and 9:30 pm.

From November 1st to January 6th – Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The fountain lights up between 8 and 9 pm and there are shows with music and color at 8 and 8:30 pm.

Annual closure: From January 7th to February 28th.

How to get to the Magic Fountain

The Magic Fountain is located at Plaça Carles Buïgas, 1, and this is only a short walk if you are staying in the neighbourhood of Sant Antoni. If you cannot get there by car, you can easily get there using public transportation.

Use the red (L1) or green (L3) line of the subway to get to Plaza Espanya. From there, you will only have to walk a couple of minutes to get to the fountain. You can also take bus 55 or the Bus Turístic, exiting at MNAC.

The history of the Magic Fountain

Work was well underway on the city’s Great Universal Exhibition in 1929 when the organizers of the event felt that something special was needed to help give it an edge over other exhibitions.

It was at this time that a young man called Carles Buigas decided to submit his design for what was a very large, daring and expensive item.

Not only would there be a fountain, there would also be a show combining water, music and lights. The result was and still is spectacular, making it one of the most successful displays of the international exhibition.

The Magic Fountain today

The Font Màgica has become one of the cities most popular attractions and every year, thousands of people flock to watch the display that takes place in the evenings.

In fact, it could be said that the Magic Fountain remains true to the name it was given. The jets of water are illuminated by various different hues of light that are synchronized to the music playing. The result is a truly magical show that will fill spectators with awe and joy.

Located just below Palau Nacional at the end of Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina, you will find that it provides you with a beautiful image of the city.
