How to feel like a German in Barcelona

In a country where it is almost the norm to have nothing happen the time it was scheduled to begin, be it doctor’s appointments, events or even meetings with friends, a little bit of German culture is always welcome. But Germans are not only known for their punctuality and efficacy. Here is how you can feel like a German in Barcelona.

Oktoberfest

Did you know that Barcelona has its own Oktoberfest? Every year at the Plaza Universo, the people of Barcelona throw on their lederhosen and throw down with liters of fantastic German beer. It’s as close to the real thing as it gets in Spain, and it is a truly great experience.

Food

Right next to the Universitat de Barcelona you will find Alt Heidelberg. This place not only offers traditional, and as usual perfect, German beers, but also all the main German classics: from Spätzle to Bratwurst, it has it. The owner is German himself and provides a great company should you want a chat in German or to know more about the food and products on offer.

Language

If you want to feel German anywhere in the world, it is important to speak the language. Language and culture are, after all, closely interlinked. BCNLIP in Barri Gotic offer all lengths of German language courses from 2 hours a week to 10. Their classes are small, with no more than 10 people in one, enabling you to have the best chance to learn. Not only will you be taught the language, but also the history of the great country of Germany. The school can prepare you towards a Dele exam, should you wish to reach a level where you could live and work in a German speaking nation.

Bundesliga

You may have realized by now that the Spanish love their football. It is more of a religion that a sport. Because of this, many different pubs and bars show Bundesliga matches. L’Ovella negra in Bogatell is one of the best spots for this. You can buy 5 liters of beer at a time, and play some pool whilst watching Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund or any of your favorite Bundesliga teams.

Even if you want to cartwheel through El Born, you will find people of a similar mind who also think that sounds like a brilliant activity. Spend some time exploring the site and you will be sure to find German group to join.

So whether you want to meet German speaking friends, go to a VW rally or have a stolen bake-off, there are many different ways you can head out of your flat, and feel like a German out in Barcelona.

  • There's another option for German food and beer: Devil's Kitchen (Teufels Küche) in Sants, just 5 minutes from the Plaza España. Serving German dishes like Wiener Schnitzel, Schweinshaxe (Pork Shank) and lots more, to wash it down with different German beers on tap.
Don't miss a Bundesliga Game or the Champions League while abroad.
