What is gourmet?

Gourmet is the idea of food as an art form. It is characterized by the elaborate and carefully presented style of aesthetically balanced meals. The term “gourmet” was originally used to describe a French wine broker, but it has since grown into a culinary phrase and can apply not only to the style of cooking, but also to someone with a refined knowledge on the subject.

Where are the shops?

Colmado Quílez is located on Rambla de Catalunya in Eixample. It is run by a company which has a long history selling gourmet foodstuffs in Barcelona. They have a great range of fine ingredients on sale, from baby artichokes in olive oil to caviar, and everything in between. They also have a really great choice of wines and spirits, over 3000 in fact. And the drinks don’t stop there! It’s one of the best places in Barcelona for local Catalan craft beers. An old school deli with loads to offer.

Casa Gispert is located on Sombrerers, in La Ribera. It is also a business with a long history in Barcelona and one of the oldest shops in the city. They have a great range of dried, bottled and canned foodstuffs, things such as nuts, tea, coffee, chocolate and dried fruit. They also sell many varieties of wine. It is a real experience visiting this outlet, like stepping into a time machine. Definitely one for any serious food lover.

Who says British food can’t be gourmet? A taste of home is located on Carrer de Floridablanca, in Sant Antoni. They sell all kinds of products from back in Britain, such as Marmite, porridge oats, golden syrup – you name it, they’ve got it. They also sell many English books as well. The prices are a little on the high end perhaps, but well worth it if you’re desperate for something in particular from back home.

Delishop is located on Passeig de Sant Joan. Here you can not only buy a wide range of gourmet foods, but also have classes on how to cook it. They will walk you through a brief history of the world’s cuisines, giving tips on how you too can bring these sumptuous flavours to your own meals. Oh, and they also have a wide range of international wines on sale too (some for under 10€)! From beginners to connoisseurs, if you want to learn more, here’s the place to go.

And finally, we suggest La cuina d’en Garriga, which is located on Carrer del Consell de Cent in Eixample. This place is really special. It’s a gourmet shop and a restaurant, so you can first taste the various ingredients cooked in a meal before purchasing. It’s well-known how good the food is here, so most people enter with high expectations and are never disappointed. And the foodstuffs in the deli are no different either. They have a wide range of Spanish, Catalan and Italian dried and canned goods on offer. An excellent establishment which offers the best of both worlds.

So there you have it, get shopping!
