Barcelona has a somewhat surprisingly large Greek population. Due to its similar Mediterranean climate and culture, many Greeks have taken advantage of the free movement across Europe to come here to make a life for themselves. Because of this, there are a lot of ways to experience Greek culture in the city of Barcelona.

There are several different Greek restaurants in around the main town, the most popular of which is located in the neighborhood of Raval. El Magraner Boig is a traditional Greek restaurant that offers all of the classic dishes, including pita, hummus, souvlaki and moussaka. El Magraner Boig is a simple and casual tavern where you can spend hours eating Greek food and practicing your Greek with the staff.

The Greeks are famous for their thinkers and philosophers, who would spend hours discussing all matters of life and existence. If you want to experience this side of the Greek culture, grab a couple of friends and spend an afternoon discussing a variety of philosophic topics. There are a number of great cafés in Barcelona where you can sit and talk the day away, but if you truly want to get into the Greek spirit, go to La Taberna Griega, where you will be able to enjoy a delicious saganaki or a scrumptious spanakopita while you exchange words with friends.

If you want to experience the Greek culture more deeply, enroll in a course to learn how to speak the language. The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona has courses in Greek and the history of Greece. There are also intensive classes in Greek at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya and modern languages classes in the Universitat de Barcelona. There is also the option of hiring a tutor so that you can have private Greek classes. You can use websites such as Tusclasesparticulares and MilAnuncios to find a good Greek teacher.
