When people think of holiday or leisure activities in Spain, because of the arid climate and lack of big rivers, water sports like rafting and kayaking are probably not the first things that spring to mind. Narrow the focus to the coasts, however, and you will find a thriving and lively sea kayaking scene. Barcelona, in particular, is home to a wide variety of kayaking options, from the beginner who just wants to splash around and learn the ropes in a day to exciting kayaking tours along some amazing Barcelona Beaches.

A sport for everyone

People that come to spend a holiday in Barcelona quickly find out they just can’t get away from the beach: it calls to them. It will happen to you too. If sunbathing isn’t your thing, there is a whole plethora of beach activities you can have a go at. Not only is kayaking a great way to get out on the sea and explore the beautiful beaches of the region, but it can be a great family activity, even small children can have a go. It has been proven as a great form of exercise for the whole body, as well as potentially rehabilitating for victims of trauma.

If you don’t know where to start with organizing a kayaking trip, you happen to be in luck. There are many great kayaking companies operating out of Barcelona and the surrounding region, such as Excursions Barcelona.  Trips from Barcelona allow you to take in some incredible sights including some amazing Costa Brava beaches and hidden coves. If the open sea doesn’t appeal to you too much, there is also the option to try kayaking in the Catalan Olympic Canal in Castelldefels. Constructed for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, the stretch of relatively still water is perfect if you feel like a little practicing kayaking before tackling your first wave!

For the Pro

If you are an expert kayaker, consider joining the kayaking community in Barcelona. This doesn’t have to mean you have to go to the beach and just start talking to anyone with a kayak! You will find there are many groups and organized trips to get involved with that will give you the opportunity to explore some beautiful Mediterranean beaches!
