When you hear about Barcelona, the first street you’ll learn about is Las Ramblas. Las Ramblas is considered the most famous and the most touristic street in Barcelona.
This tree lined street is about 1.2 kilometers long. It connects to Plaza Catalunya in the center, the Christopher Columbus monument and Port Vell, Barri Gothic to the East and El Raval to the West. Originally a sewage stream, the boulevard of Las Ramblas it was reconstructed as part of an expansion plan for the city in the 1400’s. Since then it has bloomed into the tourist epic center of Barcelona.
Entertainment & shopping
Street performers are also popular on Las Ramblas. You can generally catch them between the afternoon and night on Saturdays. Not that you won’t catch them there on other days, but their Saturday performances seem to be the most entertaining.
Artisans from various parts of the city, and sometimes even further, set up booths to sell their handmade crafts, such as soaps, bags, and jewelry. Sometimes you can also find a booth selling antiques.
Culture
One of the city’s most famous musical venues, Gran Teatre del Liceu, is a popular stop at Las Rambla. Liceu often receives Opera and ballet shows.
The Christopher Columbus monument can be found on the southern end of Las Ramblas. If you pay a price, you can take a lift to the top of the tower at the monument to see awesome views of the city.
The Market
For food shoppers, there’s always something nice to buy at the Mercat de la Boqueria, Barcelona’s flagship market. Although prices are known to be on the costly end, the market is highly respected for its high quality and fresh foods.
