Night Out in Barcelona: Carrer Joaquin Costa

In the heart of El Raval, Barcelona’s grungiest neighborhood, one will find one of the liveliest streets in the city: Carrer de Joaquin Costa. This street has a lot to offer, from vintage to locally owned and produced clothing stores, hot dogs, Chinese takeaway, organic and non-organic produce shops, and of course, bars.

Without further ado, here are some of my favorite places to grab a drink with friends, enjoy the company locals and foreigners alike, much on some tapas and people watch in the most culturally diverse neighborhood in Barcelona.

This bar lets you experience two different ambiances within one place. The bar is always crowded with friendly people, a popular spot to meet someone to make your night even more memorable. The interior design provides for a unique experience, a really unique and cool place to have a drink.

Apart from drinks, this place is open from breakfast to lunch and has some great homemade cakes. Good drinks, good food, excellent art expos, occasional live music, and a truly unique ambiance make 33/45 a great choice for bar-hopping. Joaquin Costa 4

Bar Olimpic

This place is a staple when it comes to bar-hopping on this street. The inside is grungy, with old furniture, some of which date way back to the 70s, making you feel like you’re going back in time. There are also 60 different snack options for when you get a visit from the late-night drunk munchies monster.

Beirut 37

Named Beirut 37 because of the building number, this place has a vintage feel, with a warm atmosphere and people from all over. It isn’t the largest bar, but definitely not the smallest either. Joaquin Costa 37

Betty Ford’s

The atmosphere is perfect for a slow start into a night of drinking, with dim lights and a 1950s feel. There you will find delicious, enormous cocktails, a microscopic bathroom, and some really down to earth bartenders. The only problem I might foresee would be bringing a huge group to this spot, as it is always busy and not the most spacious. Apart from their delicious cocktails, their hamburgers and veggie burgers with fries are absolutely delicious, quite possibly the best on the street.

Casa Almirall

This is one of the oldest bars in Barcelona, dating way back to 1860, and is one of the more traditional places to get a drink, where you will find people from all generations. There are two rooms separated by a partition, one part being an ancient artifact in this city, and the other half dating back to 1977. They are famous for the “Oliveta“, a classic homemade vermouth, and the “Absenta“, or absinthe, which was a popular drink at the end of the 19th century, dangerously high in alcohol content, and made famous by the jaded expats in France. It isn’t my favorite place to have a drink, but it spacious and can hold large groups, not to mention it is open every single day. Joaquin Costa 33
