If you’re living with your kids in Barcelona, you might want to find a nursery school for them. Providing care and education for young children up until the age of 5, day nurseries give your children the opportunity to learn, play and socialize with other kids while in a safe environment supervised by trained staff.

Now, if you’re a parent, you know that childcare can be pretty expensive. With that in mind, we’re here to tell you all you need to know about both private and public day nurseries in the capital of Catalonia. This way, you’ll be able to make an informed decision and choose what’s best for both your child and your wallet.

Differences between public and private nurseries

If you’re on a tight budget, private nurseries in Barcelona shouldn’t be your first choice, as they charge an average of 410€ a month. Not only that but, surprisingly, the number of caregivers per child is much higher in public nurseries. Of course, due to their different economic nature, private services are able to provide state-of-the-art facilities that are overall better equipped, which is an advantage over the public options.

The major disadvantage of public childcare centres in Barcelona is their criteria for accepting children. While in most cities family income would be the most important factor, in this case, the proximity of the child’s house to the nursery, their number of siblings and having working parents are deemed as more important when it comes to accepting your application.

If your child is indeed accepted, the price will vary depending on your annual income. So, let’s say you have an annual income of about 25,400€ – your monthly fee would be around 300€ per month. If your annual income is a bit lower, at around 16,700€, your rate will be about 210€ per month. If your salary is much lower, earning you around only 9,000€ a year, childcare will cost you only 90€ a month.
