One day trips near Barcelona: Sitges

We begin with a small coastal town just half an hour from Barcelona where you have to take a walk. Sitges is a town with almost 30,000 inhabitants that doubles its population in summer. In Sitges you can enjoy its excellent beaches and practice water sports, or you can eat the typical Spanish seafood dishes, stroll through the nearby Garraf Natural Park, explore the streets of the old town, take a picture in front of its beautiful church, or go shopping in its commercial streets with the most exclusive stores.

Sitges is also a town known for the terror film festival that is held there in October and that paralyze it with the presence of famous directors, actors, and cinematographic industry professionals. Within this famous festival also take place the “zombie walk” through the streets of Sitges, dozens of horror and science fiction fans walking as if they were true undead. Amazing!

Besides the charm of its historic streets, the Cau Ferrat Museum (home and studio of the artist and writer Santiago Rusiñol), and the cultural activity of this town, there is also a space for celebration and fun. Sitges is well known for being a gay-friendly city in Spain and many visitors come here attracted by this fact and by the Pride parade, at the beginning of July. It is also well known the Sitges Carnival, which attracts young people from around the metropolitan area of Barcelona and paralyzes the city for almost a week.

How to get there? If you don’t have your own car you can reach there by train that leaves from Paseo de Gracia to Sant Vincenç de Calders and stops at Sants Station, the largest train station in Barcelona. The journey takes just half an hour and also offers incredible views of the Catalan coast.
