Going to the cinema is an excellent entertainment option for spending some of your free time. A good film can be a piece of art by itself by sharing culture and knowledge of ourselves and our society. And then there is summer… the most longed-for time of the year, when you can enjoy long days and spend the whole evening outside because of warm temperatures. By combining these two main ingredients, summer and movies, Barcelona gives you one of the most exciting events for the next few months: cine al aire libre, or the open-air film festival. Today, ShBarcelona will tell you more about watching movies outdoors.

Watching a good movie outdoors is one of the most relaxing and fun activities to do in summer. You have already seen open-air cinemas at a village festival or at a fiesta mayor in the neighbourhood. Outdoor cinemas have become iconic, with scenes such as Danny Zuko’s attempt to grab Sandy Olsson at the drive-in cinema in the legendary film ‘Grease’. Barcelona has decided to take advantage of the magnificent summer period, and introduces the spirit of a local cinema by organising an open-air film festival in the gardens of the Castle of Montjuïc, which is a wonderful place. The organiser, and also the website for this event, is Sala Montjuïc, a cultural organisation created in 2003, that specialises in general movies and children’s movies. Good to know, there are two ways to have something to eat during the event: you can either bring your own deliciously prepared snacks, or you can enjoy a bar and food service. You can buy all kinds of soft drinks, beer and wine here and also some organic and freshly made snacks. You can try their magnificent burgers with sourdough bread or their delicious homemade pizza. They also have supercrunchy fries with your favourite salsa or spiced vegetable samosas with thai sauce. If you’re more into hummus, try the tortilla chips with turmeric.

The film festival will take place from June 28 to August 2, 2019 and will, among others, feature the following films: ‘Good Fellas’, ‘Green Book’, ‘The Adventures of Priscilla; Queen of the Desert’ and ‘Into the Wild’. You can get to the film festival by different means of transport. You can get there by car, motorcycle or bike, and park in the free parking areas near the castle. You can also reach your destination by bus. There is a free shuttle service from Plaza de España, located between the Avinguda de María Cristina and Avinguda del Parallel, with pick-up times between 8:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. and you can take the same shuttle service back after the movie has finished. Entry prices are as follows: General admission: €6.50 when you buy your ticket in advance (administration fees included) and €6.50 (at the ticket office). Children admission: €4.00 for ages 6 to 12 years and free entrance for children up to 6 years. All children may enter the cinema-concert El Cameraman for free.
