The Gran Teatre del Liceu is located in El Raval, a lively authentic neighborhood where you can grab a bite to eat at a small eatery before or after the show. The theatre, known as El Liceu by the locals, is the oldest theatre in the city and has survived many tragic incidents including two fires and a bombing. With over a thousand red cushioned seats, gold engraved decorations, and subtitles on each seat, it is definitely worth a visit.

Robert Carsen

Robert Carsen, a Canadian born producer, has made his mark all over the world. He started his career as an actor before moving into the director role. Most recently, he has been applauded for his production of Verdi’s “Falstaff” at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. After producing a wonderful version in London, he brought it to the United States for on another great showing.

In 2010, Carsen produced the entire tetralogy of Richard Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” in the Cologne opera house situated on the Rhine River in Cologne, Germany. Wagner’s Tetralogy is a series of four operas called “The Ring of the Nibelung”, or often shortened to “The Ring”. The four-part masterpiece includes the four operas “The Rhine Gold”, “The Valkyrie”, “Siegfried” and “Twilight of the Gods”.

Carsen has worked hard to bring the third opera of the series, “Siegfried” to Barcelona for a short period of time. This particular work of the tetralogy emphasizes the self-destructive power of humans and how it clashes with the natural world. Carsen takes Wagner’s work and recreates an opera with a compelling mix of gods, power, politics and drama.

Even if you are living on a tight budget, you can find tickets to the show for under 10 euros. If you are more of an avid opera goer and would like a better spot, the price will be more expensive. The tickets can be bought online and range from 9-176 Euros. Don’t miss the next performance, tomorrow on Friday, March 13th at 19:00!
