Buying organic food in Barcelona

Despite slow beginnings, Barcelona is ever on the up when it comes to the availability of organic food. Whilst it’s not yet on a par with the likes of trendy old NYC or London, it is still possible to buy lots of organic food. Well, if your budget allows that is.

Some of our favourites here at ShBarcelona are:

Woki Organic

C. Asturies 22
Gracia

And C. Hospitalet near Placa Catalunya.

As the name perhaps suggests to the more astute, Woki Organic Supermarket is a bio/organic supermarket, which also has a bakery and patisserie and sells pizzas, pasta, salads, ice creams and wok-fried organic dishes to go.

The interiors of all the Woki Organic Supermarket branches are sophisticated, beautifully laid out and very easy on the eye with stunning displays and shiny white tiled walls.

You can buy oils, Asian products, cheeses, meats, vegetables, biscuits and cakes from Woki’s inhouse panaderia, along with organic beers, dog foods, cosmetics and eco-friendly cleaning products.

Veritas

Various locations across Catalunya.

Veritas is the closest thing to Wholefoods that Barcelona has and whilst it is paltry when compared to the likes of Wholefood, it does stock the staples of a healthy, vegetarian or vegan diet and lifestyle.

Veritas have a good range of things to keep your organic kitchen cupboard stocked. They are a bit pricey but that’s the same story wherever you go.

You won’t find many surprises here if you are coming from NYC where you have a gigantic Wholefoods on every corner but you can pick from various types of organic olive oils, you can pick up Asian ingredients here such as seaweeds, rice noodles, ramen noodes, and soy, tamari and shoyu and they stock a very small range of Yarrah organic dog and cat food; organic baby products s; domestic eco-cleaning products; and face and body creams (Weleda, Dr Haushka etc).

Bioespacio

Carrer de València, 186
Eixample

The largest organic supermarket in town selling a great range of fruits and vegetables, including kale, aloe vera, all kinds of sprouts, pumpkins, and so much more.

They also sell Quorn products from the UK, which aren’t actually organic, but an exciting find for a British vegetarian.
