In the neighbourhood of Barceloneta alone, there are plenty of great restaurants, each one with its own twists on this timeless Spanish recipe.

But before we get to that, and for those who are not familiar with paella yet, let’s talk a bit about what it is and where it comes from.

Paella: From Valencia to the world

A Valencian dish of ancient origins, paella started to cement its modern base recipe in the mid-19th century. Although regarded around the world as Spain’s national dish, it is considered within the country as more of a regional staple.

With rice as its base ingredient, the original paella recipe also includes white and green beans, chicken, rabbit and snails. Its characteristic taste is accomplished by seasoning it with saffron and rosemary.

You’ll be able to find several different variations on the dish, with seafood paella being one of its most popular versions nowadays.
