It’s no wonder that table tennis is the world’s second most popular sport, topped only by the untouchable “beautiful game” of football. It’s social, it’s competitive, and perhaps most importantly, it’s accessible – anyone can pick up a racket and start playing immediately. With over 300 million registered players all over the world, this fun sport commonly known as ping pong has also recently become an urban trend.

After an initial phenomenon in the beginning of the decade that saw tables popping out everywhere in New York and London, the ping pong fever quickly spread all over the world. Nowadays, there are plenty of places where you can play ping pong in Barcelona, both in bars and in public spaces – and we’ll tell you exactly where to look for them.

To play on a public table, you’re going to need your own rackets and balls, which are normally available (and quite cheap) at any average supermarket. Once you have them, head to one of these places:

Calle Floristes de la Rambla is a square in the city centre where you are likely to find locals to play with on any given afternoon.

Parc de la Ciutadella, Barcelona’s gorgeous city park, also has several ping pong tables available for whoever wants to play.

St Christopher’s hostel (Carrer de Bergara, 3) has a bar called Belushi’s where you can play ping pong for free. Their beer is also relatively cheap, so it’s definitely a nice place to enjoy table tennis with your friends.

Luz de Gas (Carrer de Muntaner, 246) is a well-known Barcelona club that hosts #PingPongFriday every… Friday, from midnight to 2 AM. If you’re brave enough, you can stand up to the challenge of facing “Mister X”, an enigmatic player who is kind of the “final boss” of the table. You’ll probably lose, but it’s worth a try for the promised reward – a bottle of GHMUMM champagne.

Retruc (Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, 399) is a cool sports bar when you can play not only ping pong but also traditional bar games like pool and darts.
