What is a quarantine?

To prevent the spread of a particular disease, a quarantine is the name for the action of isolating people or animals for a certain time in a particular area. This measure aims to reduce the contagion curve of the region and protect its surroundings.

In the same way we can talk about confinement, because, on a larger scale, we talk about confining when we close the free movement of people in an area. This is the case of Igualada, Vilanova del Camí, Santa Margarida de Montbui and Ódena, who are in this situation because of the outbreak of COVID-19 and will not be able to leave their municipalities for 14 days, from 13 to 27 March.

How to prepare for a quarantine?

Whether it is confinement or quarantine, follow these guidelines:

  • The first thing you should have is a good pantry organization. Rather buy frozen and non-perishable foods that are long lasting and easy to prepare instead of fresh produce. Cereals, vegetables, preserved or frozen vegetables, nuts, cured meat or products, dairy products, etc.
  • It is also important to have basic health and hygiene products at home. Updating your medicine cabinet might be a good idea.

General recommendations:

Despite all these measures, we advise to keep in touch with your family by phone or video call. In these situations, it is even more important to uphold a sense of solidarity and inclusion.

If you live in a building or have neighbours, speaking with them or checking on them via phone, might help others. Especially if you have older people living in the building who might be alone or without a family to rely on.

We also recommend if you have children to explain the situation to them in a fun way, to avoid scaring them. You can make up a story and make these days pass in a more bearable way.

In any case, these are the basic hygiene measures that we must follow to prevent contagion:

  1. Frequent hand washing
  2. Avoid places with many people
  3. Do not touch your eyes, mouth and nose without washing your hands first
  4. Avoid the consumption of undercooked products

And you, what are you doing during the quarantine at home?
