Many people are dedicated rock fans, and they sure love their music unconditionally. When you picture a true rock fan in your head, it makes you think of both aesthetic and lifestyle characteristics: men and women with long hair, leather clothing and boots, and motorcycles of a certain brand with large cylinder capacities. And although their appearance sometimes frightens others, Rockers and Heavy Metal fans can be identified as honest and reliable people. The Rock music genre was born in the twentieth century and it played a key role in the history of contemporary music. Rock music also formed a big part of cultural and social movements, and from there important subcultures evolved, such as mods and rockers in the UK, and the hippie counterculture that spread across North America in the 1960s. After that, the punk culture led to more contemporary subcultures in the 1970s, such as Emo and Gothic. Many rock lyrics carry slogans that remind you of protest songs. And as Rock music often expressed political activism, it has had a social contribution to a mentality switch about subjects as racism, sex and drug use. Up until now it can still function as a rebellious act against social habits, such as consumerism and conformism. In short, rock has marked several generations, and the music genre has resulted in many different substyles.
