Places worth visiting near Barcelona

Whether you live in the city or have decided to stay in a tourist apartment or hotel in the Catalan capital, you will find a multitude of incredible places in Catalonia, which are worth a day trip. Here are a few of our suggestions:

Sitges: This is a coastal town in the region of Garraf in the province of Barcelona. Sitges is about 40 km from Barcelona. You might want to know, just out of curiosity, that the prestigious New York Times indicated that Sitges has the best urban beach in Europe. The beach is called San Sebastian, and it is being compared to Saint Tropez, Ibiza, Capri and the island of Hvar in Croatia. Sitges is also the third municipality with the most expensive real estate prices in Europe. Besides this, the first Pachá nightclub in the world was established in Sitges.

  • Colonia Güell: Colonia Güell is a small industrial colony, located in the town of Santa Coloma de Cervelló, and this is just 30 km from Barcelona. If you want to study the architecture of Antoni Gaudí, this is your place to be. It is also one of the most important modernist and tourist attractions in Catalonia. So if you are fascinated by Gaudí and impressed by his legacy, you should definitely visit this place. It is just within a stone’s throw from Barcelona.

Vic: Only 90 km from the Catalan capital you will find Vic, a town in the Osona region, belonging to the province of Barcelona. It has the most interesting medieval buildings in Catalonia. The city is also famous for its sausages. Among them you can try the salchichón de Vic, but the best known sausage is fuet, a delicacy that is usually eaten with a good slice of pan con tomate. If you would like to discover the best Catalan gastronomy and some of the most important medieval building structures in Catalonia, Vic will never disappoint you.

  • Montseny: Our last recommendation is the Montseny Massif, which is the best place to go hiking and to enjoy wonderful landscapes and views. You will find this mountain range about 70 km from Barcelona. This natural park is the oldest park in Catalonia, and it is also a park of great importance. Several different types of ecosystems can be found here, in a relatively small area: the Mediterranean (holm oaks, cork oaks and Aleppo pine), the Eurosiberian (wild pine, beech and spruce) and the boreoalpine (alpine meadow). An interesting fact is that the natural fir forest of Montseny is the southernmost in the whole of Europe. For every reason mentioned above, it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1978.
