Spice Café is somewhat of an idyll – if you are a cake lover that is. Sadly, cakes in Spain can be a bit hit and miss – often tasting very synthetic or just over-sweet. Spice Café, however, offers delicious home-cooked cakes that are perfectly sweet, delightfully presented and supremely tasty.
Whether you plum for the deep Dutch apple pie cake that is crammed full of fruit or the bright pink and divinely moist chocolate and beetroot cake, or Spice’s very own take on a classic – crumbly carrot cake with a divine cheese frosting and a dusting of lavender sugar – you and your little taste buds, will not leave the premises disappointed. And not only are the cakes out of this world, but the portions are generous.
If that’s not enough, they also serve delicious coffees and a good range of teas and infusions to help you rinse down your cake of choice.
For savoury delights, there is a distinguished lemon and pepper quiche that is both strange and delicious in equal measures, and there is a choice of bagels with a range of fillings from ham to cream cheese. Or nutella, if the mood should take you.
The service is fantastic and comes with a smile fitted as standard – which is always good in a nation famed for its somewhat abrupt and lackadaisical approach to the service industries.
Spice’s philosophy is good too – ingredients are mostly sourced locally whenever possible and their aim is quality.
There are also a number of events that take place at Spice throughout the week, such as language interchanges and a book club.
Spice has free wifi and a large table at the back for computer users, but the one downfall of this lovely café, purveyor of the divinest cakes known to Poble Sec, is that it isn’t dog-friendly, unlike the other cafes in the area.
However, if cake is your drug of choice, then it’s still very much worth the visit. The proprietors have created a delightful and friendly atmosphere and there is a tiny patio where you can squeeze with your pooch or if you want to smoke.
