Stand up paddle boarding, the latest water sport trend, has taken Barcelona by the reigns and is holding on tight. For those of you who are unaware of what paddle boarding is exactly, envision a surfboard accompanied by an upright surfer with a paddle, but without the waves and surf. It is a stimulating exercise that tests your balance, utilizes many different groups of muscles, and best of all, takes place on the beautiful ocean. This sport is makes it easy to forget that you working out, and it also allows you to appreciate the beach from a different viewpoint. Although SUP doesn’t have the best reputation for cheap prices, there is always a good time guaranteed. I have been able to find three well priced and wonderfully managed surf companies that will not disappoint, two of which are in Barcelona, and the other located in the easily accessible beach town of Sitges.

(Pg. Joan de Borbó 93, Barcelona, “San Sebastia” beach) This surf company has not only the best prices that I’ve found in Barceloneta, but it also has an interesting story. This company was created in San Sebastian in 1973 and received fame and reputation after the creator handshaped a surfboard, and since then they have created a monopoly on the surf community in Spain. Apart from SUP, they also offer early bird packages for groups of people who want to get out and see the most beautiful sunrise in Barcelona, surf lessons, and yoga on paddleboards (yes it is difficult, and yes it is a phenomenal workout). Below is a photo of the prices for hourly, daily and weekly rates, starting at just 13 euros for an hour!
This outdoor sport shop and stand up paddle company has much more to offer than meets the eye. They have a great price for an hour with a paddle board and paddle, just for 15 euros. Apart from being a surf company, they also offer schools and camps for surfing, snowboarding, skiing, skateboarding, inline skating, longboarding, BMX, kite surfing, and 2-hour SUP excursions. You have to make a reservation beforehand, butit is very easy to do so on their website.
(Espigo de Llevant without house number, 08870 Sitges): This surf company is by far the most popular paddle boarding company in town, but apart from providing the most options, including equipment, group classes, excursions etc.., they also have wonderful prices for hourly rentals. Prices depend on the number of participants and whether you are a club member or not. Their sunrise and sunset SUP activities are very popular.
How to get there: If you don’t have a car, don’t fret! The easiest way to get to Sitges is by taking a train from the train station, “Estacion de Francia”. The round trip ticket is 8.20 euros total, and you can find the train schedule here.
