In a world so busy, that moves so fast, it’s often hard for the individual to feel in control. This is the reason for the rise in popularity of yoga classes and even exercise in general. “Keep your mind strong and your body will follow”, says the old adage – but it works the other way around too.

Martial arts are a great way to keep both your body and mind in tip-top shape. In addition to all the benefits of regular physical activity, they help you improve your confidence and develop discipline and focus. All of these factors contribute to a better quality of life and are the building blocks of a balanced mind-set – the first step to success in any endeavour you decide to pursue.

Luckily for you, there are plenty of martial arts classes you can take if you are living in Barcelona. In this article, we focus on…

Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a strike-based martial art that was developed during the 1940s and 1950s in Korea. Its physical style, which promotes flexibility and coordination, is a blend of traditional Chinese and Korean martial arts and is based on 3 main actions – kicking, punching and blocking.

Philosophy – Conceptually, taekwondo is based on 5 core tenets – courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit.

Classes – If you decide to start taking taekwondo classes in Barcelona, expect to do aerobics, stretching, striking drills and balance exercises.

Gear – Students normally wear white uniforms with a belt tied around the waist. For training, you will also wear pads on your hands and feet.
