Tarragona, a city with a Roman history

Tarragona is one of Barcelona’s most important Roman sites. Awash with the legacy of the Roman Empire this beautiful port city on the north-east of Span is a far cry from the crowds of Las Ramblas or Barceloneta. The city is a fantastic visit, partly because of its beautiful coastline, but mainly because of the conserved Roman ruins that lie scattered around the city, fantastically conserved. In fact, some of the remains are so well conserved that in some pieces of stone, monograms can be made out which identify the individual slaves that made them!

Catedral de Tarragona

A national monument in Spain since 1905 the Tarragona Cathedral is probably the city’s most popular venue. Standing atop the city the spectacular Cathedral with a basilica plan is known for it’s gothic and romanesque features. The cathedral is awash with beautiful art and if you take the guided tour round the Cathedral you can learn more about its fascinating history. The entrance fee is €5, or €3 for children and the guided tour is €15 for adults and €10 for children. Museu Nacional Arqueològic de Tarragona

This museum is a fantastic way to get an overall picture of this great city. Created mid-nineteenth century the museum has become an important centre for research and recovery into the ancient history buried within the city and the museum plays a central role in the conservation and improvement of its cultural tradition. The museum provides visitors with an extensive insight into all aspects of the history of Tarragona and is a great place to start your foray into the Ancient Roman city.

Passeig Arqueològic Muralles

One of the best ways to see the city is by taking this tranquil walk through the city. The journey allows visitors the chance to walk along the 3,500m high wall which surrounds the old town. The walls are thought to be some of the best preserved Roman architecture outside of Italy! Whether you are looking for a romantic walk at sunset or something for the whole family, this is a great way to experience the cities history. Furthermore, when you reach the summit of the walk you will be rewarded with magical views of the entire city.

As well as the Cathedral, Museum and walk along the ancient wall there is also an ancient aqueduct, provincial forum, and famous Amphitheatre along with other great attractions. With the journey to Tarragona only an hour from central Barcelona, I strongly recommend you take the time to see this unique and beautiful city.
