La Pastisseria
This place is famous for its cakes (big and small). Its founder and owner, Josep Mª Guardiola, won the World Cup for the best pastry chef in 2011 for his chocolate cake (it’s called Rosa dels Vents, you can also buy it). But they also offer a really good butter croissant for just 1.10€. According to Guardiola himself, the croissant has to be light, crispy but not too sweet. If you want to try other croissant options, you can also find croissants filled with crema catalana (creme brulée), chocolate and hazelnut or cappuccino (the prices are different though).
Carrer Aragó 228 (metro stops: Universitat or Passeig de Gràcia) or Via Augusta 166 (FGC stop: Muntaner)
Baluard – Praktik Bakery Hotel
The ground floor of the Praktik Bakery Hotel hosts Baluard bakery, and it is also a beautiful space. The kitchen can be seen from the street through a glass window, and the inner space where you can sit is nicely decorated with plants and Scandinavian furniture. But the best part is that the croissants are to die for, and the place is also popular for its bread. You can tell that by long lines, especially at the weekends!
Carrer Provença 279 (metro stops: Diagonal or Verdaguer)
La Fabrique is the place for ecological and artisan baked goods. This small bakery in the Poble Sec area makes really good butter croissants, but if you want to try something else (apart from the chocolate one) try the almond croissant. A delicious reminiscence of marzipan will come to your senses!
Carrer de Radas 35 (metro stop: Poblesec)
La Xocolateria
La Xocolateria, run by Oriol Balaguer, former member of the staff of El Bulli, is one of the obvious places if we talk about croissants in Barcelona. He won the prize for the best butter croissant in Spain in 2014, and the place is brilliantly designed and decorated, and also located in a wonderful spot in El Born area. According to Balaguer, only six ingredients are required to bake a good croissant: flour, water, salt, sugar, yeast, and butter. But, he also argues, there are lots of kinds of flour and salt in the world and a lot of butter qualities. He also reveals part of his secret recipe: changing water for milk. The most famous butter croissant in Spain will only cost you 1.5€, and you can also try other things. For example, they have invented a takeaway system for churros con chocolate.
Carrer Fusina 5 (metro stops: Jaume I or Arc de Triomf)
De la crem
Although famous for its handmade and superb ice-cream, in De la crem they also offer excellent butter croissants and pain au chocolat. The place is small but has a lovely and colourful terrace at the beginning of Enric Granados street. So if you want to combine ice-cream and croissants this would be the perfect place! Check their breakfast deal if you would prefer the typical coffee and croissant combination.
Carrer Enric Granados 15 (metro stop: Universitat)
Remember that ShBarcelona offers rentals in Eixample and Born, the two areas mentioned to eat the best croissants!
