Therapeutic Dancing in Barcelona

Dance or movement therapy is a form of expressive therapy that focuses on movement as a way to support physical and mental functions of the body. While dance has been used therapeutically throughout history, the dance therapy movement has gained more recognition in recent years. In line with the logic of many other alternative therapies, dance therapists focus on the mind and body as a whole, connected and working together as one. If you’re interested in therapeutic dancing or want to become a dance therapist, here are a few places in Barcelona to consider.

Dance therapists at Danza Movimiento Terapia have worked with clients with a range of problems from mental disorders such as schizophrenia to illnesses such as depression, addiction, and anxiety. They emphasize moving the body as a means of both prevention and treatment that’s necessary for mental health and mind-body wellness.

Artemisa BCN is a school of personal growth that focuses on development through several different types of alternative therapies, including therapeutic dancing. In their dance therapy sessions, they use two ontological guides known as the “Map of Being” and the “Mirror of Being” to help clients reach a higher form of self-realization and harmony.

Sessions are all about movement as a source of tranquility and a form of release in the body that, in turn, benefits the mind and spirit. In addition to dance therapy, Artemisa BCN also offers sessions in other alternative therapies, including several varieties of art therapy and music therapy.

Become a Dance Therapist

If you’re interested in becoming a dance therapist, there are also several training programs to choose from in Barcelona. The Autonomous University of Barcelona offers a Master’s Degree in Dance and Movement Therapy. It’s a three-year program that includes supervised clinical practice and a Master’s Dissertation. Completing the degree will give you the opportunity to work as a psychotherapist in dance and movement throughout Spain and Europe.

Whether or not you’re suffering from a mental disorder or emotional pain, dance therapy can be a great way to express yourself creatively while learning to care for the mind and body as one. It can expand your awareness and provide a sense of calm and relaxation. For those who suffer from depression, anxiety, or addiction, it’s worth considering as an alternative or complement to conventional medicines.
