Explore Tibidabo

Written by Joe Thurston

Tibidabo is one of the most famous mountains in Barcelona, which offers some of the most spectacular views in the city. At the top of the mountain, there are villages, churches, restaurants, a signal tower you can climb, and even a theme park.

Access to Tibidabo is very straightforward. From your flat or hotel, you can either drive, which takes approximately half an hour from the city centre to the park at the top, or take the train. The train to Tibidabo itself is a fun journey. You can take it from Plaza Catalunya all the way to Av. Tibidado, where you can embark on a traditional mountain railway, and then a funicular train up to the top. It’s an exciting journey with lots of different aspects, however, it’s fairly expensive and in the summer and over weekends it can be rather crowded.

For a cheaper and less busy option, take the train from Plaza Catalunya to Peu del Funicular, where you can take take the connecting funicular up to Vallvidera Superior. From here either take the bus or enjoy the picturesque walk along the mountain top to the main sights of Tibidabo and Torre de Collserola.

What can we do there?

If you take the mountain top stroll, the first main site you will come across is Torre de Collserola. This is the telecommunications tower for the entire city and it offers a 360-degree view of the city.

Continue down the road and you will reach Tibidabo itself. Here you leave behind the posh local houses that overlook the city, and enter the touristic area. There are many different shops, restaurants and hotels around, but the main attraction is, without a doubt, the Tibidabo Amusement Park. It is a little bit past its best days as theme parks go, but it still offers a fun day of viewing Barcelona from the mountains, whilst shooting around in a rollercoaster.

Given how much Barcelona has to offer in the city itself, it’s easy to forget all about its surrounding areas. Tibidabo and the other mountains are definitely well worth a visit, and however busy, still remain one of the least touched tourist attractions in the city. For spectacular views and a fun day out, visiting Tibidabo is one of the best things you can do whilst in Barcelona.
