Yoga is becoming ever more popular in the west. The various styles and techniques have found their way over from India and are now an everyday thing for many. Life can be very stressful and for most of us it’s a competitive environment that we live in full of all manner of strains and worries which soon take their toll on both body and mind. Yoga is a great way to deal with it all, to release your anxieties, sooth your muscles and find that true inner peace. So it’s no surprise that practices are popping up in cities all over Europe. And Barcelona is no different. Here too there are many yoga centres.

This district of Barcelona is one of the bigger ones, bordered on the east side by Gracia, on the south by Eixample and on the west by Les Corts. It has not only urban neighbourhoods but extends far into the northern hills and has many quaint villages. It is a popular area for both those who work and live in the city and those wishing to experience more of a rural lifestyle.
Great news! There are two excellent yoga centres in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.
Escuela de yoga Shanti is located on Passeig de St Gervasi, close to Av. Tibidabo train station. It is a small but very serene practice with a very calm and welcoming feel. Here they teach the physical exercises of Hatha Yoga, as well as the calming philosophies of Shanti. They have a variety of classes on offer for both adults and children, all to help with body tensions and concentration difficulties. One part of yoga they do that perhaps some other centres don’t is meditation, the act of exercising the mind. You can take part in regular meet ups which run for 1 hour and 15 minutes Monday through Friday, or in the specialist events which occur on various dates throughout the year. And they also offer your first two classes for free, so that you can get a taste of what it’s like first.
Yoga one is located on Calle Aribau, close to Av. Diagonal. This is a much larger practice and has 17 different instructors all with different specialties. They have over 250 classes per month covering a wide range of styles and techniques, so no matter what level of fitness you have there will be something to suit your ability. They also have monthly workshops which are held by world renowned teachers on tour in the city. The studio is open from 8:30am to 9:00pm every day Monday to Friday. It is closed at the weekend.
